BASKING RIDGE, NJ – During Water Safety Month, Somerset County YMCA offers a free program designed to engage and educate parents about the importance of water safety skills and provide more children access to water safety lessons. The Safety Around Water Program is designed for children ages 3 to 10, and it is offered May 6 through June 3 at Bridgewater YMCA, Hillsborough YMCA, Somerset Hills YMCA and Somerville YMCA.

As a community-based nonprofit committed to youth development, Somerset County YMCA teaches swim lessons and water safety to over 3,600 children each year. Through the Safety Around Water Program, the Y hopes to introduce these invaluable life skills to even more children.

Safety Around Water is a 5-week course that encourages parents and caregivers to help their children learn fundamental water safety skills. Children will learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations -- from how to reach the water’s surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool’s edge or exiting any body of water. This program is designed to introduce non-members who have never taken swimming lessons to the water.

“Understanding water safety is critical and all children deserve access to the resources and knowledge that will keep them safe,” said David M. Carcieri, President and CEO of Somerset County YMCA. “The Y’s Safety Around Water Program equips kids with the tools they need to be confident in and around water so they can enjoy the health benefits of exercise, the opportunities to bond with family and friends and the sense of accomplishment when they learn new skills.”

Families interested in learning more about the Y’s Safety Around Water Program and how to enroll their child should visit www.somersetcountyymca.org/watersafety.
