SOMERVILLE, NJ - Robert Petix Jr., owner of Savor Restaurant and 1995 graduate of Immaculata High School, has donated $2,300 from patrons of the Main Street restaurant to the family of Det. Matthew Tarentino, a Summit police officer who died in a car collision on Route 78 May 30.

Tarentino, who had lived in Somerville his entire life, graduated from Immaculata High School in 2006; his wife Vickie, mother of three young children, graduated in 2005. She is the marketing director at the school.

Petix’ sister was a classmate of Tarentino’s.

When Petix learned of the tragedy, he felt the need to help the family; he consulted with Jean Kline, principal of Immaculata High School, and received her permission for the restaurant to offer a voucher program, with 20 percent of each dinner check dedicated to the Tarentino fund during the month of June.

The vouchers were advertised on the Immaculata Spartans Facebook page and by word-of-mouth.

Kline presented the money to Tarentino’s widow, who gave birth to the couple’s daughter, Anastasia, earlier this month.

The Summit PAL has also established an online fund to benefit the family.  The link is https://www.youcaring.com/victoriatarentino-835682
