FAR HILLS, NJ - New Jersey's largest and perhaps most well-stocked rummage sale - held each spring and fall to benefit the Basking Ridge-based Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills - begins on Friday and will continue through next weekend at the Far Hills Fairgrounds.

Appraisals on Wednesday with expert Nick Dawes

The art of finding bargains will begin with looking in your own home with an opportunity on Wednesday, May 5, to seek an informal appraisal of your personal items by renowned antiques and fine art expert and auctioneer, Nick Dawes.

Dawes will be at the fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The appraisal fee is $10 per item, and Dawes has agreed to donate all fee to the VNA of Somerset Hills.

SPRING SALE DATES are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 5, 6, and 7.

On Friday and Saturday, sale hours are 9:30 a.m.to 3:30 p.m. Sunday sales hours, when much of the merchandise is gone, but prices are typically steeply slashed, are from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The rummage sales, involving hundreds of volunteers and thousands of shoppers, help the VNA provide home health and hospice care to families in need, along with other wellness services not covered by any insurance.

The rummage sale items - everything from furniture to high fashion, to books, toys and kids' clothes, household goods, Halloween costumes, recreational equipment, artwork and much more - come from donations throughout the Somerset Hills community and beyond. Volunteers test to make sure items are whole and functioning.

Each year, some valuable and unusual items show up among the donations, with some of the most valuable items ending up in the BonTon tent, one of about two dozen departments apportioned under large white tents that are already up at the fairgrounds.

The Far Hills Fairgrounds are located at the intersection of U.S. 202 and Peapack Road (county Route 512) in Far Hills.

Parking and admission are free. However, the rummage sale site is also easy to reach by train. The entrance gate is within short walking distance from the NJ Transit Far Hills station off Route 202.
