Friday Afternoon Movie at Bernardsville Library: "Marianne & Leonard"

On Friday, March 27 at 2:00 pm, Bernardsville Public Library will present a free screening of the 2019 movie "Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love.”  The documentary begins on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of a community of expat artists, writers and musicians.  It’s a unique portrait of an idyllic 1960’s bohemia, a time that left a lasting imprint on both Marianne and Leonard, whose love and friendship would last another fifty years before their deaths in 2016.

“An emotionally complex story of a poet and his muse,” wrote The New York Times reviewer Glenn Kenny, “It’s a story that is at once simple and threaded with startling complexities.  Its emotional entanglements and narrative twists can seem the stuff of fiction.”

The documentary has revealing clips such as Cohen playing in New York’s Central Park to a vast audience which had come to see the folksinger Judy Collins, who instead introduced her unknown fellow Canadian to sing “Suzanne,” the song he wrote that she had made famous.  The documentary also explores Cohen’s struggles to preserve his art from the pressures of show business.

The maker of the documentary, Nick Broomfield, is part of the story himself.  In the late 1960s, he, too, met Marianne Ihlen in Hydra.  Ihlen is better known to the world as Cohen’s muse; but she was an inspiration to Broomfield as well, encouraging his film work.

Viewers are encouraged to linger after the film to talk about it.  A brief document with background information will be provided to start the discussion, and there is always a spirited conversation about character, motivation and style.

Bernardsville Library's movie series is funded by gifts to the Friends of the Bernardsville Library.  The movies are selected for cultural enrichment and for appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests in the community.

There is no charge to attend the movies; advance sign-up is requested, but not required.  To register online go to www.bernardsvillelibrary.org and follow the link from Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
