"George Washington Bridge: Poetry in Steel"

Michael Aaron Rockland, Professor of American Studies at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, will speak about his newly updated book on the George Washington Bridge at Bernardsville Public Library (1 Anderson Hill Road) on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 pm.  “George Washington Bridge: Poetry in Steel” recounts the history of the bridge, which, since opening in 1931 and linking New York and New Jersey, has become the busiest bridge in the world.  Over 100 million vehicles cross it each year.  Many people also consider it the most beautiful bridge in the world.  Books will be available for purchase and signing, and $10 of each sale will be donated to the Library.

In his presentation, Mr. Rockland will explain how suspension bridges work, talk about the fact that the bridge was never finished because of the Depression, and how, when he was first researching the book, he climbed to the top of the bridge’s New York tower accompanied by four Port Authority policemen.  He’ll also discuss Bridgegate and the issues the case raised at the hearing before the Supreme Court in January.

There is no charge to attend the library program, but advance registration is requested.  Register online at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org, and follow the link under Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
