BERNARDSVILLE, NJ - The Borough Council passed a resolution last month to support Bike Smart Bernardsville and to promote bicycle safety throughout the month of July.
The Bernardsville Police Department has joined with the Bernards Lions Club to declare this month as Bicycle Safety Month in the community.
Police officers in town will be handing out certificates redeemable for a free ice cream cone to kids they see actively practicing proper bike safety. The traits of safe bicycle riding that would make children eligible for the ice cream treats include maintaining a safe bicycle, wearing a helmet, the use of proper lighting and reflectors after dark, using a bell or horn, proper hand signals, riding with the flow of traffic and not against it, riding single file, being courteous to pedestrians and walking a bike across the street at intersections.
Kids spotted observing these safe practices who receive a free ice cream certificate also will become eligible to enter a grand prize drawing for a Bicycle Safety Package to be held at the Bernardsville National Night Out event Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the municipal pool.
The prize drawing is open to any Bernardsville resident under the age of 18 who can enter the contest by stopping by the Police Department to present their bicycle helmet for inspection or pledging to practice bicycle safety this summer.
