BERNARDSVILLE, NJ -- Two Middlesex County men were arrested Monday in connection with a robbery Friday in Kiwanis Park.
Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor and Bernardsville Borough Chief of Police Kevin J. Valentine announced that Cristopher Gomez-Madrid, 19, and Marcus Bailey, 20, both of North Brunswick, were arrested after an armed robbery in the Bernardsville park.
According to Robertson, at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, Bernardsville Police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting an armed robbery and shots fired in the area of Kiwanis Park. Police report that four 17-year-olds were robbed by two suspects. As the victims ran from the scene, one of the suspects fired a shot at them. None of the victims were injured during the event.
Responding officers were able to obtain a description of the suspects’ vehicle which had fled from the scene. The vehicle was subsequently located by Bernards Township Police as it traveled on Route 287 South. A motor vehicle stop was conducted and the occupants subsequently identified as Gomez-Madrid and Bailey were detained.
An investigation revealed that the four minors went to Kiwanis Park to meet with Bailey and Gomez-Madrid. The meeting was pre-arranged through social media to purchase a quantity of marijuana. Upon arrival at Kiwanis Park, two of the juveniles entered the suspects’ vehicle, where Gomez-Madrid displayed a knife and Bailey displayed a firearm while demanding their money. The two juveniles handed over $30 and ran back toward their vehicle along with the other two juveniles. As all the juveniles were running, Bailey fired one shot, hitting the vehicle. The juveniles ran past their vehicle and Gomez-Madrid and Bailey entered the vehicle, taking three cell phones and a backpack. Gomez-Madrid and Bailey left the area in their vehicle.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspects’ vehicle and found a 9 mm firearm, an airsoft gun and marijuana. During a search incident to arrest, a knife was located on Gomez-Madrid. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident.
Gomez-Madrid and Bailey have both been charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, one count of second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, third-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, third-degree Knowingly Possessing an Airgun without a Permit, Disorderly Persons Offense of Possession of Marijuana under 50 grams and Disorderly Persons Offense of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
