BERNARDSVILLE, NJ -- While many football teams around the state that do not open until the weekend of Sept. 13-14 won't have their final scrimmage until sometime this week, Bernards scrimmaged for the final time on Friday, Aug. 30.

Now, the Mountaineers won't play again until their regular-season opener on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Hillside. Bernards lost to Hillside in the Central Jersey, Group 2 championship game last season.

TAPinto Somerset Hills will have a full preview of Bernards football before that Sept. 14 lidlifter. Head coach Jon Simoneau put the team through the paces in the pre-season, which included an emphasis on hard work in the weight room and a rigorous scrimmage slate capped with a meeting with a powerful 2018 playoff team in Rahway, which gave Bernards all it could handle on Friday.

"If we can hold our own in our league and win our crossovers, we have a chance at the playoffs thanks in part to the new strength of schedule format that all teams in our division should benefit from," said Simoneau, who is enthused about off-season weight room participation and robust numbers in grades 9-12.

"With 60 kids in the program," Simoneau said, "(football) is the most popular boys fall sports at the school."
