CLARK, NJ -- The Bernards football team rallied for a 30-21 victory over A.L. Johnson on the road Friday night.
Teddy Gouldin threw three touchdown passes for the Mountaineers (2-1), who at one point trailed, 14-9.
An interception by Jackson Tantleff led to Bernards' first score, a field goal by Steven Lopez. Johnson came back to take a 7-3 lead before Gouldin connected with Joey Billotti for the first of his three scoring passes to give Bernards a 9-7 lead.
The first-half continued in see-saw fashion as Johnson regained a 14-9 advantage, but the Mountaineers rallied for a 15-14 halftime lead on a 20-yard TD pass from Gouldin to A.J. Mino.
After a scoreless third quarter, Bernards extended its lead to 23-14 early in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by Mike Leanza and a two-point conversion run by Billotti. The Crusaders closed to within 23-21 on a breakaway TD, but with three minutes left, Gouldin found Lucas Ritchie on a third-down-and-9 pass from the Bernards 40 and Ritchie took it to the house for a 60-yard TD reception and a 30-21 lead.
