BERNARDSVILLE, NJ -- Sophomore halfback Mike Leanza scored three touchdowns and the Bernards football team handed Middlesex its first loss of the season, 35-24, Friday night.

Leanza scored two of his touchdowns in the second quarter to help Bernards (7-1) open a 21-7 lead. His second TD run was set up by a blocked punt by Max Gray.

The Mountaineers had taken a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 25-yard TD pass from Teddy Gouldin to Jackson Tantleff and an extra point by Steven Lopez.

Middlesex (8-1) closed to within a TD, 21-14, before halftime. Bernards built its lead to 21 points on TD runs by Gouldin and Leanza in the second half before Middlesex scored the game's final TD.
