BERNARDSVILLE, NJ -- The Bernards football team shut out Delaware Valley, 24-0, in the opening round of the Central Jersey, Group 2 playoffs Friday night.
Mike Leanza scored two touchdowns and rushed for 125 yards for the Mountaineers (8-1), who will play either Cedar Creek or Point Pleasant Boro in South Jersey in the second round next weekend.
Steven Lopez gave Bernards a 3-0 lead with a 22-yard field goal in the first quarter. A 15-yard touchdown pass from Teddy Gouldin to Leanza in the second quarter extended the Bernards lead to 10-0. Gouldin was 16-for-23 for 222 yards passing.
Delaware Valley (6-3), which lost to Bernards, 32-7, in the regular season, was still in the game down 10 points, but Joey Billotti returned a Del Val punt 72 yards for a TD before halftime, and that was the backbreaker. Bernards led, 17-0, at the break.
Leanza, who carried 22 times, took a pitch from Gouldin and ran 12 yards for a TD with 6:39 left in the third period for Bernards' final TD on the frigid night.
Jackson Tantleff and Jack Chisholm each made interceptions and middle linebacker Luke Burns helped stifle the Del Val running game, sparking the Bernards defense to its second shutout this season.
