HILLSBOROUGH, NJ—Hundreds of runners of all ages will descend upon the Hillsborough Municipal Building on Sunday, Aug. 25 to participate in a 5K race that honors the memory of Hillsborough High School track star Jason Walton, who took his own life in 2008. The run was established by his parents in his memory the following year.

The 10th annual Jason's Run begins at 9 a.m. The municipal complex is located at 379 South Branch Road.

Jason’s Run is a USATF certified and sanctioned event, and it’s more than just an opportunity to celebrate the life of an athlete gone too soon.  It’s also a chance to raise funds to provide scholarships to Hillsborough High School seniors who, like Jason, are runners who embody a warm and generous spirit and sense of sportsmanship towards others.

“This event is more than just a labor of love”, said Linda Walton, Jason’s mother and event organizer. “It’s an opportunity to make an impact in the community.”

Throughout his high school track years, Jason had the opportunity to compete - and often win - against other talented runners, one of whom - Robby Andrews - went on to be an Olympic athlete.

“It’s so wonderful to see athletes that ran with and competed against Jason still attend to honor him and help our desire to continue to award scholarships to two HHS students for their extra efforts, both on and off the track,” Walton added.

The event is partially sponsored by the Hillsborough Education Association through a New Jersey Education Association PRIDE grant, and donates the t-shirts for the runners while encouraging the Hillsborough school community to support the cause.

“The HEA is proud to be a part of Jason’s Run, both to honor Jason’s memory and to support student athletes in our schools,” said HEA President Henry Goodhue. “As a Hillsborough resident, I know firsthand how connected our town is, and this event is just one of the many ways our community demonstrates that Hillsborough is one of the best places to live.”
