2 Pedestrians Struck, Killed on Route 22; Rush Hour Traffic Snarled

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Two pedestrians were killed early Thursday morning after they were struck by a vehicle on Route 22 West in Bridgewater.

A 2004 Toyota Sienna, driven by Xu Chengfei, 41, of New York, in the left lane of Route 22 West struck 29-year-old Robert Gibbons and 23-year-old Magdalene Allen, both of East Brunswick, around 3:12 a.m. on Route 22 near North Adamsville Road while they were in the left lane of travel, according to Bridgewater police.

Both the man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital-Somerset for non life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was snarled Thursday morning during the investigation with all lanes on Route 22 West near the Bridgewater Diner closed through the morning rush hour. Route 287 North Exit 14B onto Route 22 West was also closed, and traffic coming from Bound Brook was being diverted to Ronson Road and Foothill Road.

The Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau and the Somerset County Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the crash.
