SOMERVILLE, NJ – This is an art course with no brushes, no watercolors or acrylics, but the end results burst with vibrant colors and images.

“No art experience is necessary,” Antin said, “it’s the process I am teaching, so it doesn’t really matter what your background is. There are so many new techniques with pencil,” she added.

The utilitarian graphite pencil was first invented in the 16th century in Germany. The first colored pencils were developed in Switzerland in 1924.

Antin, a Manville resident, is a board member of Arts on Division, a non-profit corporation dedicated to an expansion of the arts in downtown Somerville. It sponsors several outdoor arts and entertainment events each year.

“This is where I want to be,” Antin said. “The timing is wonderful  for Somerville, we’re trying to reach a lot more people, to get the arts into the community as much as possible.

An instructor with the Princeton Arts Council, Antin is hoping to spend more time teaching in Somerville.

“We’re hoping it takes off, to continue here with other painting and drawing classes,” she said.

Antin will exhibit her works at Gallery on Main, 30 W. Main St. later this year.

There’s still time to sign up for the course online. Visit:
