BRIDGEWATER, NJ – A portion of the proceeds raised by the Somerset Patriots during the team's 18th Annual Golf Classic at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station on Monday, Sept.11th will be donated to the family of fallen Summit police Det. Matthew Tarentino.

Tarentino, a lifelong resident of Somerville, was killed in a three-car collision on Route 78 May 30 while driving to work.

His wife Victoria gave birth to their daughter, Anastasia, earlier this month; she has two brothers, Robbie, 3, and Raymond, 2.

The Golf Classic is a five-player celebrity scramble, with each foursome being matched up with a Somerset Patriots player or coach. There will be a shotgun start at noon and different contests on the course to win prizes.

Golfers will enjoy lunch and a special buffet dinner with awards and a raffle to help raise money for the Somerset Patriots Children’s Educational and Sportsmanship Foundation and the Tarentino family.

Tarentino, promoted posthumously to Detective, was a valued officer, community member and friend. His loss has had a great impact on friends, neighbors and family in Somerville and his fellow officers and the residents he served. Tarentino epitomized what a law enforcement officer should be: a respected, trusted colleague with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm for his calling, according to his colleagues.

Tarentino was the face of the department’s community policing unit and understood the importance of building relationships within Summit, most recently serving as Summit's DARE officer. During his time with the Summit Police Department, he created a lasting imprint on the department and the city as well as the children of Summit.

There are many ways to participate in the event, including golfing, sponsorship and donating raffle prizes.

Participation is limited. For more information, call (908) 252-0700 or visit www.somersetpatriots.com/community/golfouting
