TROY, NY - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute quarterback Edward Trimpert, a 2015 graduate of Hillsborough High School, has been selected as the Offensive Performer of the Week in football by the Liberty League after leading the Engineers to a season-opening 45-0 victory over William Paterson University on Saturday.
Trimpert, a junior, completed 11 of 14 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns against the Pioneers in the NCAA Division III contest. He threw a four-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead and then a 45-yard scoring strike in the third for a 31-0 edge. He was neither intercepted, nor sacked. Trimpert also rushed six times for 31 yards, including a long of 15 yards.
Trimpert finished out his high school career with the Raiders by being named the Most Valuable Player in the Basilone Bowl in 2015, which brings together the top players from Somerset County High Schools in the summer after theiri graduation. The all-star game honors Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone, a Raritan native who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism and actions during the Battle of the Guadalcanal in World War II.
This is the first weekly award for Trimpert, a mechanical engineering major, who started seven games before suffering an injury last season. He completed 44 of 93 (47.3%) passes for 497 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions. He also rushed 49 times for 108 yards and two scores. He was chosen to the conference's Weekly Honor Roll once before being chosen to the Liberty League All-Academic and CoSIDA Academic All-District teams.
RPI is back on the field on Saturday when it travels to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for the Transit Trophy Game at 1 p.m.
