He said the man was in the northbound lane when he was hit at 6:52 a.m., “possibly tending to a deer that had been struck and killed at an unknown time.”

A thin, pink blanket had been placed over part of a young deer which remained on the side of the road after the scene had been cleared and reopened to traffic. It had signs of decomposition on its torso.

Piscataway police issued a travel alert at 7:15 a.m., closing Stelton Road between New Durham Road and Haines Avenue. They reopened the area just before 9:30 a.m.

The accident remains under investigation. The condition of the driver was not released.
