EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Playhouse 22, East Brunswick’s Community Theater, along with the New Jersey Creative Arts Collaborative will present a reading of Momma’s Porch on Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. as part of the theater’s Facebook Live Play Reading Series.
Momma’s Porch is about a young zealous reporter set out to document the history of a local woman turning 106 years old for his next article, but is pleasantly surprised to learn about by the many famous black historical figures she‘s met throughout the course of her “ordinary” life. The show is directed by Gwen Ricks-Spencer and written by Greg McQuery, based on an idea by Tony Wilkes.
As a result of the pandemic, Playhouse 22 has moved some of its live theater online using various platforms including Facebook. In April and May, the theater presented works from local playwrights using online platforms.
“While we have had to postpone our scheduled productions of Harvey and Camelot, we found that live theater must continue,” said Adam Neary, executive producer, “And, as the old saying goes, the show must go on! These platforms have given our followers an opportunity to watch live theater in their living rooms.”
The New Jersey Creative Arts Collaborative is a non-profit arts organization with the goal to inform, inspire and illuminate artists of color. We are committed to broadening cultural awareness by offering performance opportunities, educational development, leadership training through partnerships with other organizations.
"NJCAC is excited to partner with Playhouse 22 in the presentation of this new play. Momma's Porch provides a window into the world of Ms. Sini and the lives she has touched and that have touched her. Audience members will hear the stories of a full and rich community of people that she has interacted with over her 106 years of life,” said Ms. Ricks-Spencer.
Playhouse 22 is located at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center at 721 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.
