Morristown Medical Center is Offering FREE Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screenings During Month of April

MORRISTOWN, NJ - Free oral, head and neck cancer screenings will be held in April at Morristown Medical Center in recognition of Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month.

Symptoms of head and neck cancers are often vague, and may include a persistent sore throat, hoarseness or change in the voice, lump on the neck, earache, pain when swallowing and unexplained weight loss. Some people do not exhibit any signs or symptoms. 

All screenings will be conducted by Dr. Tom Thomas, director, Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery and Transoral Robotic Surgery, Leonard B. Kahn Head and Neck Cancer Institute, Morristown Medical Center.

Head and Neck Cancer is a group of cancers that usually begin in the squamous cells that line the mucosal surfaces inside the mouth, nose, throat, and occasionally the salivary glands. These squamous cell cancers are often referred to as squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck.

Alcohol and tobacco use are major risk factors for head and neck cancers. Infection with cancer-causing types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) also increases a person’s risk of certain head and neck cancers.

Head and neck cancer is more common among men than women. These cancers are also diagnosed more often among people over age 50 than among younger people.

Screening dates and locations are:

  • April 2, 10  a.m. – 12 p.m., Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, 100 Madison Avenue, Morristown, NJ
  • April 19, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Rockaway MMC Health Pavilion, 333 Mount Hope Avenue, Rockaway, NJ
  • April 23, 10  a.m. – 12 p.m., Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, 100 Madison Avenue, Morristown, NJ
