SOMERVILLE, NJ – While sometimes-boss Jimmy Buffet shares the Barclay Center stage in Brooklyn with James Taylor and Sarah McLaughlin Friday night, Coral Reefers lead guitarist Peter Mayer will perform an intimate concert of highly stylized and traditional Christmas music with his own band at United Reformed Church on Main Street.

The ninth annual Stars and Promises Holiday Concert on Dec. 9 begins at 7:30 p.m.

Mayer grew up in India, where his parents were missionaries, an experience that has had a heavy influence on his music, a blend of jazz, fusion, syncopation and guitar riffs; the Peter Mayer Band will add guitar, mandolin, violin, keyboards and a variety of wind instruments. The Somerville High School Choir will also lend its talent to the show, as it has done for the past several years.

The theme of this year’s concert is “Wings of Angels,” according to former Somerset County Freeholder Rick Fontana, one of the show’s promoters and close friend of Mayer.

A portion of the show’s proceeds will benefit the Somerville Education Association.

A recording to the performance will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the show.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets at the door are $35.
