Santa Claus Plans Extended Visit to Somerville

SOMERVILLE, NJ - No doubt about it, Santa Claus is coming to town – again, and again, and again.

Santa will be escorted into town by firefighters from Somerville and fire departments throughout the state at the V annual Nighttime Firefighters’ Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, beginning at 6 p.m. down Main Street.

The Somerville PBA #147 has invited Santa to join them at the Somerville Library on West End Avenue, adjacent to borough hall on Monday, Dec. 5th where Santa will read “The Night Before Christmas.”

Somerville Santa will help parents with Special Deliveries of personalized gifts to their homes between Dec. 10th and 13th.

Firefighters, rescue squads, police departments, Scout groups, civic organizations, churches and schools across New Jersey are invited to participate in the parade. Staging begins at 2 p.m. on Veterans Memorial Drive East, adjacent to the Engine Co. #1, 170 E. Main St.

The parade down Main Street begins at 6 p.m., and will wind its way through side streets in the borough before returning to Engine Co. #1 where hot chocolate will be served and winners will be announced.

Dozens of trophies will be awarded in several categories, and residents who decorate their homes and host parties are also eligible to win prizes.

Event day registration and check-in will be at Engine Co. #1.

The Somerville Santa Program features a surprise visit to residents’ homes with a gift supplied by parents.

Parents must complete a participant form, and return the paperwork with the wrapped gift to designated drop-off locations in advance of Santa’s visit. A form must be completed and taped to each package to be delivered. Multiple gifts should be placed together in a plastic or shopping bag when delivering tio drop-off points.

Drop-off Locations are at the Somerville Police Department, 24 So. Bridge St. and TD Bank, 50 West Main St.

Sign-ups require parents to select a date and time between Dec. 10th and Dec. 13th.

Gifts must be dropped-off between now through Dec. 3rd.

Gifts are to be less than $20 in value, less than 24 inches in size and less than 10 pounds. There are no exceptions.  The gifts will be picked up by Santa’s helpers and given to Santa Claus, who will hand-deliver the gift to children in their homes. Only one visit per residence.

There is no charge for the program, now in its 13th year. Donations are accepted and can be mailed to The Somerville Fire Department Board of Engineers, 224 E High St., Somerville, NJ 08876.

“The Night Before Christmas” visit with Santa at Somerville Library features arts & crafts, pictures with Santa, and five time slots for the reading:  6:30-7 p.m.; 7-7:30 p.m.; 7:30-8 p.m.; 8-8:30 p.m.; 8:30-9 p.m.

There is a suggested donation of $5. All monies collected will be donated to the US Marines’ Toys for Tots program, St. Hubert’s Animal Shelter and Displaced Children.

Parents must reserve seating online. Space is limited. If all time slots sell out a limited number of standbys will be released and filtered in when time permits.  Everyone who donates will meet Santa.
