Somerset Animal Shelter Sees Record Number of Pet Adoptions in 2017

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Pet adoptions at the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter, reached an all-time high in 2017, with 992 cats, dogs and other small animals finding permanent homes.

This is the fourth consecutive year that adoptions have increased, and is part of the shelter’s continued success after nearly closing in 2013 because of a lack of adequate funding.

“It was a very busy year for us,” shelter manager Brian Bradshaw said. “In addition to caring for our own local population of homeless pets, we took in animals in desperate need from Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico following the hurricanes, as well as nearby hoarding cases. The community rallied behind us and we were so inspired by their support.”

Since 2013, adoptions have nearly quadrupled, with 254 in 2013, 725 in 2014, 764 in 2015, 840 in 2016 and 992 in 2017. In 2013, it was 34 dogs, 196 cats and 24 other animals; in 2014, it was 299 dogs, 411 cats and 15 other animals; in 2015, it was 356 dogs, 397 cats and 11 other animals; in 2016, it was 403 dogs, 430 cats and seven other animals; and in 2017 it was 475 dogs, 503 cats and 14 other animals.

“We couldn’t have reached this level of success without the dedication of our staff, volunteers, the town and community,” assistant shelter manager Rose Digilio said. "We're a community organization and we need continued community support."

In October, the shelter was honored by the Bridgewater Township Council with a special proclamation and celebration for its many years of service.

Somerset Regional Animal Shelter is open seven days a week for adoptions from noon to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays until 7 p.m.

The facility is located adjacent to the Bridgewater Township municipal complex, 100 Commons Way.
