SOMERVILLE, NJ – Somerset County Sheriff officers spent three days at the end of September rounding up parents who were delinquent in making their child-support payments, according to Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano.

The operation conducted Sept. 26 to 28 involved more than three dozen sheriff's officers working in teams.  A total of 47 men and women who owe a combined total of $952,298.50 in child support were arrested, according to Provenzano.

The sweep extended beyond Somerset County, with arrests made in Middlesex, Union, Morris, Mercer, Camden, Monmouth and Essex counties and Brooklyn, N.Y.

One of those arrested was Somerville resident Marquis Esaw, 36, who was in arrears for $9,992.96, according to Provenzano; of those arrested, Roger Munoz, 45, of Plainfield, owed the highest total in back child support, $143,435.73.

.“This operation was conducted to remind parents of the importance of making regular child support payments and hopefully renew their commitment to do the right thing,” Provenzano said. “Child support is a safety net for many Somerset County families. Children depend on child support for their basic needs such as food, shelter, healthcare and back-to-school clothing. Conducting these roundups gives us the ability to better serve children and families with the financial support they need and deserve.

“The roundup was a great success as far as the statistics show,” he added. “What we don’t see is how many delinquent parents pay up once they know we are looking for them. Knowing that they face possible arrest encourages delinquent parents to uphold their obligations or face incarceration. It creates a compounding effect of payments that lasts weeks after the roundup.”
