SOMERVILLE, NJ – United Reformed Church, “The Church on Main Street” will celebrate 45 years of sponsoring the Central Somerset CROP Hunger Walk, which is will take place in downtown Somerville on Sunday, Oct. 20th at 1:30 p.m.
CROP Hunger Walks are interfaith events that originated in 1969 and are sponsored by Church World Services. Walks take place in 1,500 communities across the United States and in more than 30 countries worldwide. Neighbors walk together to raise funds to address hunger in their community and around the world. United Reformed Church has hosted the event for 45 years.
Together, walkers of different ages, faiths and backgrounds, raise money and awareness of hunger issues. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised in the Central Somerset Walk will be split between two local hunger fighting organizations: The Food Bank Network of Somerset County and the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program. The remaining funds are used by Church World Services for hunger programs that help global communities flourish, such as providing tools needed for community gardens, installation of water pumps and filters, as well as emergency food supplies in drought affected areas. CWS also provides emergency relief services to those affected by natural destruction.
Local congregations participating include United Reformed Church, First United Methodist Church of Somerville, North Branch Reformed Church, Congregational Church of Bound Brook, First Baptist Church of Somerville and Manville Reformed Church.
“I am proud to be a part of a congregation that is so committed to feeding the hungry”, said Mark Cannizzo, URC’s Walk Coordinator. “It takes generations of people who truly care to keep a walk going for 45 years, that speaks volumes of our members’ dedication to love and serve others”.
United Reformed Church is also collecting non-perishable, canned food items. Donations can be dropped off to the church office Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., or to the CROP Walk Registration table on walk day. There will be a pre-walk kick-off celebration and registration beginning at 12:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to participate by either walking the long route (3 miles) or the short route through Somerville’s historic neighborhoods. Anyone with a passion to make a difference and a desire to help feed the hungry is welcome to join the walk.
