UNION, NJ – Three members of the Kean University Cougars men’s soccer team, including Somerville's Alex Noriega have been honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Included on the NJAC roster are freshman Vinceroy Nelson of Piscataway, named 2017 Rookie of the Year. Nelson also earned a spot on the second team of the All-NJAC selection alongside junior Erick Reyes of Summit.
Noriega, a senior, was named to the Honorable Mention team. Noriega totaled 12 points on four goals and four assists in 13 starts during the 2017 season.
“The main lesson I want my players to learn is that hard work will always pay off,” said Peter-John Falloon, head soccer coach at Kean. “If you want to be successful, you have to go the extra mile.”
Nelson landed the Rookie of the Year honors after he tallied 17 points on eight goals and one assist, including two game-winners. He became the fifth player in program history to take home the award and the first since 1997.
“If it weren’t for the other players, and Coach Falloon, this wouldn’t be possible,” said Nelson, noting that the accolades are a reflection on the team.
Reyes earned his first All-NJAC selection after totaling 16 points on seven goals and two assists, including three game-winners.
Noriega earned his first All-NJAC selection as well, after totaling 12 points on four goals and four assists in 13 starts.
