Somerville Forum Probes Latest Drug Abuse Trends Among Youth

SOMERVILLE, NJ –Parents, guardians and professionals who work with children and families are invited to a workshop to learn about the latest drug abuse trends facing youth today.

The program will be held Friday, Feb. 26, from 9-11:30 a.m. in the first floor conference room at the Somerset County Human Services Building, 27 Warren St. Parking is available in the adjacent parking deck, third level or higher.

Keynote speaker Michael Litterer will review the latest substance abuse trendsand provide information about popular alternative drugs, including syntheticmarijuana, Flakka, Molly and vaporization.

Litterer will also address the damaging effects of these drugs, methods for identifying them and the impact on society and other trends.  

Litterer is deputy director of Prevention Links, a nonprofit organization that implements federal, state and local grants to provide prevention programs and recovery support services. He has 15 years of experience in the field of prevention and early intervention and is a national presenter on the topic. 

The program is co-sponsored by the Somerset County Youth Services Commission, Safe Communities Coalition of Hunterdon and Somerset New Jersey, EmPoWER Somerset, the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse and the Friends of Somerset County Youth.

The program fee is $20. Cash or checks will be accepted. Checks should be made payable to Friends of Somerset County Youth.  Professional development credits will be made available.

Somerset County Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Grace Gurisic, First Woman Freeholder

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Somerset County will fly its flags at half-staff July 12 in memory of Grace A. Gurisic, who served as the county’s first woman freeholder more than half a century ago.
