Somerville Hosts Girls on the Run 5K June 11

SOMERVILLE, NJ - Girls on the Run of Central New Jersey will host a fund raising 5K Sunday, June 11 with the start/finish line at Grove and East High Street, alongside the Somerset County office complex.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9:30 a.m.

On-site registration is $35. Runners are asked to make a $16 donation in celebration of the group's 16th anniversary.

Proceeds are used to provide scholarships to girls in low-income areas,

Awards will be announced beginning at 10:30 a.m. as follows: 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall male/female; 1st, 2nd and 3rd in 10-year age groups 10 and under, 11-70.

Refreshments will be provided to runners only.

The course map is posted on https://signup.com/NJSomerville/Girls on the Run5K.

GOTR will also be collecting food donations for the Somerset County Food Bank. A list of requested items can be found online at www.somersetfoodbank.org.

Several streets on the east side of the borough will closed to accommodate the runners. The course is certified by the USATF.

Chip timing will be operated by Best Racing Systems, with race results posted on www.bestrace.com.

Girls on the Run was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina with the help of 13 girls. Twenty-six girls came the next season, then seventy-five. In 2000, Girls on the Run International, a 501(c)3 organization, was born.

What started with one school has grown to over 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. With the help of over 100,000 volunteers, Girls on the Run served over 185,000 girls in 2015, including its millionth girl! In the same year,

Girls on the Run hosted more than 350 end-of-season 5k events across the United States, making the Girls on the Run 5k series the largest in the country, and launched a new middle school program, Heart & Sole, which is dedicated to the unique needs of adolescent girls.
