SOMERVILLE, NJ - Hosting an indoor fund raising event on a sunny Sunday in the waning days of summer can be tough.

That's what the Somerville PBA was up against this past weekend.

For the second year in a row, the YESTERcades video arcade on Division Street hosted a 12-hour fund raiser for the Somerville PBA #147; despite the competition with beach weather, backyard barbecues and other outdoor dalliances it was a successful day, according to Dave Chudy, PBA president.

By day's end, the combined efforts of PACman, Superman, Spiderman, Pokemon and other virtual superheroes going head-to-head with gamers of all ages raised $360, according to Chudy.

"Any amount of money helps," Chudy said.

Gamers had full access to the arcade’s attractions, which include dozens of console games, pinball machines, pool tables, knock hockey and other video games.

The PBA holds other fund raisers during the year, including the 5th annual Oct. 13 Dinner and Comedy Show at the Manville VFW; all monies raised go back into the community, according to Chudy.

“We use the money for different things; the majority goes out as donations to other places,” he said. “We support other PBAs and the families of police officers, cops who are injured in the line of duty, but we try to keep it as local as we can.

“Sometimes we get requests from the community to help a sick relative pay medical expenses, we’ll throw some money in that direction,” Chudy said.

The PBA also offers scholarships to students at Somerville High School and immaculate High School and will donate money to help students go on class trips that might not be able to afford it otherwise.

The past few years, the PBA has purchased turkeys and donated them to needy families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“That’s something we’ll continue to do,” Chudy said.

The PBA also supports the Special Olympics with a donation, and supports two of its members, Officer Tim Franks and Officer Vito Spadea who cycle 300 miles each May in the Unity Tour to Washington DC with hundreds of other police officers from New Jersey.
