NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - For the second week on a row, the dominant Somerville High School Pioneers outscored and outmuscled their opponent, with the North Plainfield Canucks on the short end of a 56-13 score Friday night at their home opener..
Quarterback Justin Brenner (7-21) threw for 148 yards and three touchdowns in the Mid-State Mountain Division game, with Cookie Desiderio and Kyree Hinton each scoring three touchdowns in the lopsided victory, which saw the Pioneers ahead at the half, 30-7.
Desiderio piled up 146 yards on 18 carries and scored on three 2-point conversions. Hinton scored on a 31-yard fumble recovery early in the game and in the fourth quarter ran in an 89-yard kickoff return.
The Pioneers' defense was led by Noah Irwin and AJ Pena with eight tackles apiece, with Deondre Gadson finishing with six tackles followed by Eric Bryant with five.
In a non-conference game Sept. 6th, the Pioneers beat Hamilton High School 44-6 in their home opener.
Next up is a road game Friday, Sept. 20th against Voorhees in Glen Gardner; kickoff is at 7 p.m.
