RARITAN, NJ - Seen by millions of motorists over the years, the iconic Gateway Motel Tower, a landmark at the Somerville traffic circle for decades, was demolished yesterday as construction crews continue to clear the site along Route 206 for a Quick Chek convenience store and gas station.

Demolition began last week on the old Popeye's and Denny's buildings adjacent to the motel property.

The 5,500 square-foot Quick Chek store planned for the site will have eight gas pumps. The site of other two buildings demolished last week have been approved for a separate 12,144-square-foot retail building with four yet-to-be-determined businesses.

Approval was given for the new businesses in May.
