Through the Yuda Band organization, the Student Council was connected with Evelyn in Guatemala and will be selling handmade Yuda band bracelets to help raise money on her behalf to enable her to continue her high school education.

“I am so proud of this Student Council and particularly of their charitable efforts to make a global connection that is still very personal as well, said Dr. Joseph Trybulski, principal of Hillsborough Middle School. "They are not just helping a fellow student in a far off country and her local community. They are recognizing the universal value of education in all of our lives and showing that our community can extend well beyond our borders,” he added.

The HMS Student Council aims to sell 300 bracelets in order to provide Evelyn with a scholarship. Recently, the students were introduced to Evelyn via Skype. Through a translator, they were able to ask her questions about everything from her family and daily life in Guatemala to what inspires her and what she would like to do in the future.

HMS students are selling the handmade Yuda Bands for $7 through Feb. 22. The bracelets can be purchased from a Student Council member or by emailing the advisors at jgetz@htps.us or tsharples@htps.us.

The following local businesses will also provide discounts to Yuda Band wearers:

Angelo’s pizza - $1 off a large pie; Just Subs - 50 cents off a half sub or $1 off a whole sub; Super Sundaes - 20 percent off during the month of April.
