SOMERVILLE, NJ   Kids and adults need look no further than Downtown Somerville to find a bundle of Halloween fun beginning this week, from costume contests and a “Howl-o-Ween” dog parade to a Halloween pub crawl, concluding with a “Spooktacular” featuring a giant pirates' ship at Borough Hall on Halloween, Oct. 31st.

Here’s a summary of Halloween parties and events on Main Street and beyond:

Halloween at the Somerville YMCA, 2 Green St., Friday, Oct. 25th, beginning at 7 p.m. features a festive night of "spooktastic" fun and games, and a haunted house, Frankenstein’s laboratory, a DJ and costume contests for adults and kids. Verve Bar, Restaurant and Bistro, 18 E. Main St.,  will host its annual “Two Nights of Fright” on Friday, Oct. 25th and Saturday, Oct. 26th, featuring costume parties both nights from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. and specialty drinks, with a third costume party on Halloween, Oct. 31st.

Costumes are required for the 8th annual Halloween Pub Crawl on Saturday, Oct. 26th, sponsored by Project P.U. B., 41 No. Bridge St., and Tapastre, 1 W. High St., with participants meeting on Division Street at 8:45 p.m. to begin their journey to several bars in the downtown area. There will be two groups, each headed in different directions, with both groups scheduled to visit the same locations. Stops on the crawl include Mannion’s Irish Pub & Restaurant; Alfonso’s Family Trattoria and Gourmet Pizzeria; the Salted Lime, Tapastre and Project P.U.B.

Village Brewing Company, 34 West Main St. will host a costume party with Magic 98.3 radio, Saturday, Oct. 26th from 8 p.m. until midnight, featuring a live DJ and costume contest, with $500 awarded to the winner.

The Van Derveer Elementary School will host the annual "Trunk or Treat" event for children and adults in the school community on Saturday, Oct. 26th, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the school, 51 West Union Ave. Trunk or Treat is coming! Registration is open until Tuesday, 10/22. Flyers were sent home with students. An evening of candy, costumes, games and prizes. VDV families are invited to decorate their cars with fun, family-friendly themes and to provide a safe and fun environment for kids to get "tricked and treated." Prizes will be awarded to the top three decorated trunks.

The “Howl-o-Ween” Pet Parade and Costume Contest, sponsored by the Downtown Somerville Alliance and The Hungry Hound will begin at noon on Sunday, Oct. 27th, with owners and their dogs – in costumes - gathering on Division Street. Once things get organized, the parade will proceed west down Main Street to The Hungry Hound, 93 W. Main St., where specialty dog pastries and treats are baked daily.  Judging will begin at The Hungry Hound at 12:15 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Best Overall, Cutest, Funniest, Scariest and Best Duo.  No retractable leashes are permitted and frisky dogs, or those lacking social skills, are asked not to participate.

Wrapping up Somerville’s Halloween festivities is the “Spooktacular” on Halloween, Oct. 31st from 3-6 p.m. Sponsored by the DSA and the Somerville Recreation Department, there will be music, entertainment and candy for trick-or-treaters at three locations – Division Street, Main Street and Borough Hall, 25 West End Ave. The Pirate ship will be “anchored” at Borough Hall from 3-6 p.m.  Participating merchants will hand out candy. There will be free parking in Municipal lots 1,2 and 4  The event will be held rain or shine.
