Bright and early Saturday morning, beginning at 7 a.m., the 3rd annual Somerville Challenge 5K Obstacle Run to support the Somerville Volunteer Rescue Squad will kick off at Firehouse Field on Veterans Memorial Drive. The event has raised $6,500 since since 2017 and is sponsored by Bodhi by Anthony on West Main Street.

The event features the “Run the Ville” experience, a challenging 5K obstacle course designed by fitness experts for families, teams and individual participants. Racers will tour downtown Somerville’s beautiful
Peters Brook Greenway and tackle carrying, crawling, balancing, and memory challenges along the 5K racecourse.

“We are honored to take part in this year’s Somerville Challenge 5k Obstacle Run, bringing together our community for a day of fitness challenges, team camaraderie, and community support,” said Karen Monetti, owner of bodhi. “Whether this is your first 5K or you are an obstacle race veteran, this year’s unique challenges will guarantee you cross the finish line dirty, sweaty, and smiling.”

Participants can register to take part in the 3rd Annual Somerville Challenge 5k Obstacle Run at: SomervilleChallenge5k.com. All race participants will receive free entry into the 7th Annual Original Downtown Somerville Octoberfest presented by Tapastre and Project PUB on Sept. 28th. North Bridge Strret between Main Street and High Street will be closed off with dozens of beer vendors from New Jersey micro breweriesset up along the street.

Also on Saturday, Sept. 28th, dozens of downtown merchants are participating in a Sidewalk Sale with specials, discounted prices and select merchandise.

The following weekend, Oct. 4th-6th will feature the inaugural Ville Film Fest, three days of independent films that will be shown at seven venues throughout town, including Division Street. There will be 48 film screenings, parties and an awards ceremony.

The Film Fest is being produced by a non-profit created by Steven Chiocchi, owner of Cheech’s Own Coffee Company at the corner of West Main and Division streets.

Oct. 6th will also feature the annual Fall Street Fair on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic. Hundreds of vendors will be set up on the street, with food, retail merchandise, crafts, jewelry, home services and other merchandise.

It’s been a whirlwind of arts, culture and entertainment in downtown Somerville, beginning with the Sept. 14th Arts on Division Festival, a full day of artistry and music hosted by Arts on Division and coordinated by Shaun Daley and Michelle Pankowski, owners of Gallery on Main at 30 W. Main St.

Thousands came to town on Sunday, Sept. 15th for the 10th annual Central Jersey Jazz Festival, which began as the Somerville Jazz Festival. Rick St. Pierre, owner of Verve Restaurant, Bar & Bistro, 18 E. Main Street, has seen the event grow to include performances in Flemington and New Brunswick the two days preceding the closing show in Somerville.

Division Street was also the venue for the inaugural Village Brewing Company Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 21st; the pedestrian mall was jammed with locals and out-of-town visitors enjoying the fresh beer and beer-infused German delicacies created by the Village Brewing Company staff.

Division Street will also be a big part of the borough’s “Spooktacular” Halloween celebration, sponsored by the DSA, on Halloween, Oct. 31, from 3-6 p.m, which will also include activities at Borough Hall and on Main Street.
