SOMERVILLE, NJ - Jason Kraska, chairman of the borough's Recreation Commision, has been checking the weather forecast for days now, and he's relieved to inform participants in the 4th annual 5K Turkey Trot that the 9 a.m. race time forecast is calling for partly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40s.

Hosted by the Somerville Recreation Department, 1,000 or more runners are expected to compete in the Thanksgiving Day event.

Runners can still register, beginning at 7:45 a.m. - cash or check only. Entry fee is $35.

The staging area, start and finish line is adjacent to Engine Company No. 1, 170 E. Main Street at the corner of Veterans Memorial Drive.

All proceeds benefit Recreation Department programs. Runners are also asked to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Somerset County Food Bank.  A list of the items needed is online at

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m., with awards presented at 10 a.m.

The 3.16-mile course was designed by Kraska. The course winds through the eastern and southern streets of the borough. The event is USATF Certified, with Sanctioned 500 Grand Prix Points. To view the 5K route go to the following link:

Parking is available at the parking deck located nearby at 59 Veterans Memorial Drive. Entrance is between Warren Street and Hamilton Street.

10 a.m. - Awards

Individual awards categories include:  1st, 2nd and 3rd, Overall Male/Female Age Group; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Male/Female 14 & Under; 15-19 years old; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69 and 70 years and older.

Team Awards include team with the Most Members and 1st Place Team based win with top 3 finishers
