SOMERVILLE, NJ - A parking deck for commuters and future residents of the NJ TRANSIT village under construction alongside the Raritan Valley line has begun to take shape adjacent to the Somerville train station.

The five-story deck will include more than 400 spaces; the structure will be hidden from view, surrounded by apartment buildings that will be built on the site.

Progress continues on several components of Somerville Station, with 3-story townhouse models framed out alongside the entrance off South Bridge Street.

Somerville Station will include 156 townhouses, 374 apartments in multiple buildings lining the interior roadway, a civic center with retail stores and parking deck when completed.

Somerset Development is the owner of the property, and has contracted with Pulte Homes to build the townhouses and Avalon Bay Communities, which will build the civic center, retail stores, apartments, parking deck and public plaza across from the existing Somerville train station.

Pulte will offer homes ranging in size from 1,004 to 1,930 square feet; the first homes are expected to close over the next several months.

Avalon Somerville will feature studios, 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom apartment homes and amenities, including an extensive fitness center, co-working space, lounge, heated outdoor pool, rooftop deck, courtyards with BBQ grills, pet spa and pet park, according to Ludivine O’Toole, development director at AvalonBay Communities.

The Somerville Station mixed-use transit village is the largest redevelopment project in the borough's history. 

The 80-acre tract is bounded by the railroad, South Bridge Street and Route 206. The partially-constructed interior roadway, lined with cobblestones, will stretch through the community from South Bridge Street to Route 206 north.

The new 4,000-square-foot civic center will provide needed space for future Borough Council and municipal boards meetings and replace the current meeting room at 24 South Bridge St., located adjacent to police headquarters, which will be relocated to a new facility planned on Gaston Avenue.

The shared parking structure will replace the existing commuter parking lot, allowing commuters to access the train station uninterrupted throughout construction. 

Somerset Development was given approvals for the multi-faceted plan by the borough Planning Board in May 2018.
