SOMERVILLE, NJ - Igloos on Division Street? Maybe.
With a bright blue sky overhead and temperatures in the high 40s, Natalie Pineiro thought it was a perfect day to build an igloo on the Division Street pedestrian mall - in the shadow of the borough's Christmas tree, which is already in place for the official tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 30th.
Pineiro, executive director of the Downtown Somerville Alliance, broke open the boxes with all the pieces of PVC pipe and connectors, and with an assist from her marketing assistant, Samantha Shaw, began to build the igloo. Behind them, leftover fall harvest cornstalks were tied to one of the lamp posts which will soon be decorated with holiday wreaths and banners.
The 11-foot diameter frame came together in less than an hour.
Borough officials must first approve the idea of plastic igloos as part of the holiday landscape before they are erected, according to Pineiro.
The plan is to have as many as six of the igloos in place on Division Street in time for holiday shoppers, according to Pineiro. There will be interior lighting strung inside the plastic-covered igloos - with chairs for weary shoppers to kick back and enjoy a hot cup of coffee or holiday snack.
Nov. 30th kicks off the borough's holiday shopping season, with Small Business Saturday; merchants will be offering discounts, giveaways and specials from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. The Holiday Jubilee will bring Santa to light the tree, with festivities on Division Street and downtown Somerville from 5-9 p.m.
