SOMERVILLE, NJ - “The Somerville Caroling Festival,” sponsored by the Somerville and Ridge High School Music Departments and featuring the choirs of several local high schools will take place on Friday, Dec, 14th at 4 p.m. in the 600-seat sanctuary of United Reformed Church,100 W Main St.
Choirs from Somerville High School, Mount Saint Mary Academy, Hunterdon Central High School, Hanover Park High School, Bernards High School, Ridge High School, the Newark Academy and Warren Hills Regional High School will gather to perform songs of the season.
The concert will include a varied holiday program including sacred and secular music and traditional holiday carols. The directors are committed to programming interesting arrangements and often incorporate soloists, feature small ensembles and a variety of instrumental accompaniments.
“The concert is a favorite among our own members and everyone looks forward to it each year”, said Rev. Paul G. Janssen, Pastor of United Reformed Church. “We feel this concert deserves a broader range of recognition and we hope others in the community will come out and hear how talented these kids are.”
Somerville High School choral director Karen Gorzynski has helped organize this event for over twenty years. The festival began as an outdoor choral competition and evolved into an evening of sharing that seems more fitting with the season.
“The choirs are coming together to share our music, celebrate the talents of our students who choose to sing and support each other’s programs. We are all incredibly busy this time of year," Gorzynsk said. "The directors are not able to go hear each other’s concerts as we are out and about performing our own programs. This evening is very special to us. We pause to sit in a beautiful space and bask in the gift of music made by talented youth. What could be more in keeping with the spirit of the season?”
The event is open to the public, admission is free however seating may be limited to the balcony. For more information, call United Reformed Church at (908) 725-4545. SOMERVILLE, NJ -
