North Plainfield Police received a 911 call at 2:18 a.m. on Aug.19, 2018, about a man having been stabed in the area of Grove Street in North Plainfield, near the Plainfield border. North Plainfield police officers found the victim suffering from stab wounds. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes and Crime Scene Units, the North Plainfield Police Department, and medical investigators from the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office responded to conduct the investigation. The post-mortem examination revealed that Garcia-Lopez had been stabbed multiple times..

Police determined that six minutes before receiving the 911 call, Garcia-Lopez, who was along, walked past a group of 15 individuals, several of whom eventually began to chase the victim on foot as he ran down Grove Street into North Plainfield.Interviews and surveillance footage helped police identify the suspects who were eventually arrested.
