BASKING RIDGE, NJ - The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County:

CHILD/PARENT PROGRAMS

Young Explorers Club.,Mondays, Sept. 11, 18, and 25 from 10:30-11:30 a.m., children age infant to 5 with a parent will experience the wonders of     nature through outdoor activities that stimulate the five senses. Fee is $22 per pair and $11 per additional child for the 3-day session.  Register online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or call 908-766-2489.  Advance payment required.

Tot Trek - FREE PROGRAM

Tuesday, Sept. 12, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Children age infant to 5 with a parent will leave their strollers behind for a leisurely walk along the trails of Lord Stirling Park to enjoy the natural beauty of New Jersey. Program is free.  Register online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or call 908-766-2489.      

Wild Kids, Sundays, Sept. 17, and 24, 1030-11:30 a.m., children age infant to 5 with a parent will cure cabin fever on an exploration of the Great Swamp using the five senses to explore the natural world. Fee is $15 per pair for the 2-day session and $8 per additional child.  Register online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or call 908-766-2489. Advance payment required.

CHILDREN/TEEN PROGRAMS

KinderNats, Mondays, Sept. 11,18,25 from 4-5 p.m., children ages 5 to 7, who are enrolled in kindergarten and first grade will study science and explore the natural world through games, naturalist-led activities, and more. Fee is $18 per person for the 3-day session. Register online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or call 908-766-2489. Advance payment required.

ADULT& FAMILY PROGRAMS

Hawk Watch Hike at the EEC, free program, Friday, Sept. 15 1-2 p.m. Family and friends of all ages will join a naturalist to hike the trails of the           Great Swamp with an eye out for migrating birds of prey. The program is free. Pre-registration is required. Register online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or call 908-766-2489.

Bird Walks, Saturday, Sept.16, 7-9 a.m.  Adults will join a naturalist on a stroll around the grounds of the EEC seeking out the many migrant birds that pass through the area. The walk is free and registration is not required.

Fossil Hunt, Saturday, Sept. 16, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Family and friends age 12 and older will join a naturalist on a day trip to collect classic Devonian fossils including brachipods, sponges, and more, all found in the loose roadside gravel. Fee is $40 per adult and $35 per student or senior.            Register online at www.somersetcountyparks.org or call 908-766-2489.  Advance payment required.

Family Nature Walk, free program, Saturday, Sept. 16, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Family and friends will enjoy a naturalist-led interpretive walk through the Great Swamp. Pre-registration is not required.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission Is free.

Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.

United Way Holds Free Tax-a-Thon Feb. 2 & 3

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Low- and moderate-income residents can get their taxes filed during Northern New Jersey United Way’s free tax-a-thon event Feb. 2 and 3 which will include popcorn, prizes and children’s face painting.

Held at United Way’s Bridgewater office, 1011 Route 22 West, Suite 202, the sessions will take place by appointment only from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
