BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The annual Basilone Bowl, a showcase for graduating seniors in Somerset County and Delaware Valley Regional in Hunterdon County, has been canceled for 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 15 football players from Somerville - 7 from the Somerville High School Pioneers and 8 from the Immaculata High School Spartans - had been selected to play in the showcase.

In a letter to athletes and coaches, Bridgewater-Raritan High School football coach Scott Bray, who is also president of the Somerset County Football Coaches Association, said they tried to hold out as long possible, but, with the uncertainty, the task of coordinating the event was not possible.

“With the announcement from the governor…that schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year, the Coaches Association feels that it is best to cancel this year’s Basilone Bowl,” he said in the letter.

Seniors chosen for the June All-Star game were set to begin practice in the next few weeks.

The game is played at Basilone Memorial Field at Bridgewater/Raritan High School in honor of Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone, awarded the Congressional Medal of honor for his heroics in the Battle of Guadalcanal in the early days of World War II. Basilone grew up in Raritan, and lost his life on the beaches of Iwo Jima in 1945.

The players are divided by their schools into two teams, the Devil Dogs and the Leathernecks.

“To the players, do not let this take away from the honor of being selected to represent your school and your community,” Bray said. “We as coaches are disappointed that we will not get the opportunity to coach and be around so many amazing young men. You have achieved many great things and created life long bonds through the game of football.”

Bray thanked the coaches for the time they spent in support of the event, and also thanked the United States Marine Corp for its support in making the game possible.

The game features football players from all the schools in Somerset County, and Delaware Valley Regional. The players are divided by their schools into two teams, the Devil Dogs and the Leathernecks.

The Leathernecks squad included seven members of the Somerville High School Pioneers: Noah Irwin, Otto Kornas, Eric Bryant, Will McIntyre, Patrick Perluso, AJ Singleton and Justin Brenner.

Also selected to play for the Leathernecks were eight members of the Somerville Immaculata High School Spartans: Tommy McGuire, Ryan Enright, Alex Sias, Joe Toto, Pelton Esannason, Jr., Johnny Mallory, Randy Behn, and Zach Helleis.
