SOMERVILLE, NJ - Record breaking three-digit temperatures forced cancellation of several metropolitan-area sporting events Saturday, including the New York City Triathlon, but it was game on at Somerville High School for several dozen young athletes

The Youth Activities Committee of the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068 hosted a Batters Up and Soccer Shoot Challenge on Saturday,  with winners from each age bracket advancing to district, state and regional competitions.

Batters Up, participants ages 5-15 as of April 2019 had 10 swings to score points based upon the distance of each hit.

 Soccer Shoot, participant ages 5-16 as of August 2019, were given 15 shots on goal to score points based upon a grid system.  

The Somerville Elks Lodge had a regional level participant in 2014 for the Soccer Shoot after winning at the state level; a Batters Up participant made it to the District level in 2016, according to Somerville Elks chairman Brian Smith.
