Bound Brook Police responded to a report of a robbery at the Shop Rite at 9:28 a.m. Aug. 1. Employees told police that a man approached a cashier, said that he had a weapon and demanded money from the cash register. The cashier gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of currency and the suspect exited the store and drove away in a dark colored sedan.

Detectives determined that on the same morning of the Shop Rite robbery, Sivetz went to the Target located in the Bridgewater Promenade at 8:51 a.m.. He handed a cashier a note that stated he had a gun, according to Robertson.

As the suspect reached over the checkout counter, he attempted to grab currency from the cash register drawer. The employee closed the drawer on the defendant’s hands preventing him from taking any monies. The defendant ran out of the store and fled the area in a dark colored sedan.

On Aug. 4, Robertson said the suspect went to the Macy’s department store, located in the Bridgewater Commons Mall, and shoplifted five clothing items valued at $280.50.

The following day, Robertson said Sivetz returned to Macy’s and attempted to return the clothing items. The store manager that they would not accept the returns without a proof of purchase.

The suspect walked away with the clothing items. Before exiting the store, he grabbed two men’s shirts and two men’s dress ties off a display rack and put the items in a Macy’s shopping bag that contained the other shoplifted items, according to Robertson.

After exiting the store, Sivetz walked towards his parked vehicle. A store employee, who was monitoring the attempted return via a security camera, approached the defendant and identified himself as an Asset Protection associate.  A struggle ensued as the associate attempted to prevent the defendant from leaving before Bridgewater police arrived. Sivetz dropped the shopping bag he was carrying and fled the area in a dark sedan, according to Robertson.

Early Sunday morning, Aug. 6, detectives arrested defendant Sivetz at his residence. He was processed and lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
