SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - A car fire in the parking lot of the Quick Check food store on Route 27 in Kendall Park this afternoon forced a brief evacuation of the store, according to police.

At 12:30 p.m., South Brunswick Police along with Kendall Park Fire Department, Monmouth Junction Fire Department and Kendall Park First Aid Squad responded to the fire.

 Several 911 callers reported the fire was endangering the building and the store was being evacuated.

According to witnesses, the owner of the car was in the store when a passerby alerted him that his 1994 Buick was smoking.

The 61-year-old North Brunswick man exited the store and was able to get his Pug dog named King out of the vehicle, according to police.

The Kendall Park Fire Department was able to extinguish the blaze in 10 minutes.

The strip mall of stores reopened approximately a half an hour later. There were no injuries but the vehicle was destroyed, police said.
