The goal of the event is to give residents a better understanding of the issues surrounding hunger. Topics will include how food pantries can serve the community and the importance of providing locally grown produce to area pantries.

“Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this community meal,” said H. James Polos, Executive Director of the Middlesex County Improvement Authority, which operates MCFOODS. “I know all our guests will be pleasantly surprised at what they’ve learned about their local food pantry, and may be inspired to give back to their community.”

Rutgers University Dining Services chef Peter Blake has partnered with event leader Douglas Wilson, and others to prepare the meal. The dinner will begin with a cocktail hour featuring favorites like sweet potato puffs and pizza bagels, all on a pantry budget.

“This will be a great opportunity to combine good food with good company, something that everyone can appreciate,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Deputy Director Charles Tomaro, liaison to the MCIA. “It is also a great way for people to become aware of the resources provided by the MCIA and its MCFOODS network and how they are helping those in need throughout the County.”

Admission for the event is free. Groups of four or more are asked to RSVP to Jennifer Apostol at by June 8.

For more information on MCFOODS, visit the MCIA website at, call 609-655-5141 or follow the food bank on Facebook at Mcfoods Network on Twitter @MCFOODSNetwork or on Instagram at mcfoods_network.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
