OTTOWA, CANADA- The New Jersey-led US Women’s National Team won last night against Germany advancing to the World Cup final for the second straight year.  Carli Lloyd, from Delran, converted a penalty kick in the 69th minute and broke the scoreless tie.  It was enough to get the win with yet another shutout by the team and Hope Solo.  With the shutout it brings the US to 513 straight minutes without the opponent scoring, the longest such streak in US World Cup history.

Lloyd’s score came less than ten minutes after Celia Sasic missed on a penalty kick for the first time in German World Cup history.  The kick came as a result of a mental slip by Julie Johnston, who to that point had been having possibly the best World Cup for the US.  Missing the kick started to turn the momentum back to the US side and after a few charges Alex Morgan broke through and drew the penalty kick for Lloyd to score.

The German team had a small amount of fight left but it was quickly gone after another score by substitute Kelley O’Hara.  With more magic from Lloyd, dancing along the end line, O’Hara ran into the box to put Lloyd’s cross into the back of the net.  A second goal completely defeated the German team and with the remaining six minutes they could only rattle off one last shot that was off target.

Coming into the game Germany had been the highest scoring team in the World Cup averaging 12 shots on goal per game.  The trademark stifling defense of the American side only allowed a single shot on goal and 15 total shots in the game.  It was also the first time since 1995 that the Germans had lost by two goals in the World Cup.  With the win America now has a 3-1 record against Germany in World Cup play.

Looking ahead to the final game on Sunday, the US will play the winner of tonight’s other semifinal of Japan versus England.  This is the fourth time playing in the title game for the Women’s World Cup which is tied for the most with Germany.  With a win on Sunday, America will be the first team to earn three titles in the World Cup.
