PISCATAWAY, NJ - The “Expressions” traveling art show, showcasing a variety of art in different media and in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, is moving to Piscataway’s JFK Memorial Library at 500 Hoes Lane on Sept. 16.

The Middlesex County Office of Aging and Disabled Services and the Middlesex County Office of Cultural and Heritage is sponsoring the show that features artwork by New Jersey artists with disabilities. The exhibit was created in partnership with Central Jersey Arts Council (CJAC), VSA NJ, and the Borough of Carteret.

“The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. In the 25 years since then, Americans have worked tirelessly to ensure that the civil rights of the disabled are promoted and protected,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “Here in Middlesex County, we strive to meet ADA requirements in all aspects of County life. Our Office of Aging and Disabled Services continues to collaborate with the Board of Chosen Freeholders and other governmental depart-ments to provide access and a higher quality of life for all County residents living with disabilities. This art exhibit is a project the Board is very proud of, and I know patrons will find much to enjoy at this showcase for our local artists.”

Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, Chair of the Business Development and Education Committee, said: “I applaud this ambitious exhibit, and the collaboration of the Cultural and Heritage Office and Office of Aging and Disabled Services. Through their partnership, Middlesex County is able to offer unique cultural programing in the Arts and History for all residents and visitors.  ADA accessibility at every venue is just one way in which this County works to include all of our diverse residents.”

Freeholder Blanquita B. Valenti, Chair of the Community Services Committee, said: “Like those who first proposed the ADA, Middlesex County has a long history of reducing barriers to and changing perceptions of those with disabilities, and we hope this exhibit will continue that initiative. We are always looking for input on what further services and efforts are needed for our citizens with disabilities, and this fall, we will be conducting a needs assessment to address this issue. We encourage all persons with disabilities and their family members to contribute and give feedback.”

The exhibit will be on display at the JFK Memorial Library from Sept. 16 through Oct. 4. The library is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.
