NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Police are not charging the man that punched 19-year-old Emily Rand, knocking her unconscious, Capt. J.T. Miller said Wednesday.

“We’re pretty much done with the investigation. We’ve interviewed everyone,” Capt. Miller said. “We interviewed the male that punched her in the video that’s floating around as well as others at the scene. At this time, there’s not going to be any arrests or any charges in any direction, against her or against the other people in the video.”

In the video, Rand, a Middlesex County College student, was part of a number of people involved in a verbal altercation on Robinson Street near Central Avenue at around 1 a.m. on Oct. 29, Capt. Miller said.

The dispute, however, turned violent when Rand struck a male in the head.

The unidentified male retaliated, punching Rand and knocking her down backwards on the pavement, striking her head on the concrete, knocking her out, police said.

According to a Rutgers Nixle alert regarding the altercation, the crowd then dispersed and Rand was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick in serious condition.

Family members told media outlets at the time that Rand suffered a concussion and a fractured skull during the fight and was undergoing surgery to relieve swelling in the brain.

She is still recovering in the hospital.

The video of the incident was also released by the family on social media to try and help identify and find the male involved.

Capt. Miller said police knew the identity of the man and interviewed him, as well as several others appearing in the video.

“We spoke to the family (Wednesday) and they understand the situation,” Capt. Miller said. “The family said (Rand) is doing better and we will be talking to her.”

Capt. Miller said that if other information comes to light, police may look at the case again.

In regards to the video and initial social media posts that the man “was on the run,” Capt. Miller said that was not true and that he did speak with investigators.

Family members told media outlets that Rand was attending a party at the location and was not a student at Rutgers.
