Scholarship Established in Memory of Fallen Soldier and Former Middlesex County College Student

EDISON, NJ - Ida Gonzalez presented a donation to Veronica Clinton, executive director of the Middlesex County College Foundation, in memory of her son, establishing the Specialist Michael L. Gonzalez Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship honors the memory and service of Michael L. Gonzalez, a former MCC student who died August 28, 2008 in Baghdad, Iraq, while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Funding for the scholarship is provided by the Butterfly Circle of Friends, established by Ida and Pedro Gonzalez, based in Spotswood, NJ.

SPC Gonzalez was a 2006 graduate of Spotswood High School. SPC Gonzales enlisted in the Army after graduation and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in July 2006.

SPC Gonzalez graduated from the Military Police School in December 2006 and then deployed to Iraq in July 2008, as a member of the 340th Military Police Company, Fort Totten, New York.

SPC Gonzalez died in Baghdad of wounds suffered by an Improvised Explosive Device. His military awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Global War on Terrorism ribbon and the Army Service Ribbon.
