In an earlier press release, Capt. Jim Ryan said police received calls about suspicious men in the neighborhood around 12:30 p.m.

When a patrol sergeant arrived on the scene within minutes, he saw a man sitting in the passenger side of a green van.

As the officer parked his patrol car and began to exit, he saw a second man emerge from the side of a home down the street, Capt. Ryan said.

The officer told the man to stop, but he continued run to the van, jumping into the driver’s side, and then drove the vehicle down George’s Road.

The officer notified police dispatch and then checked the home to see if other suspects were inside the home the man ran from, Capt. Ryan said.

He discovered a screwdriver, gloves and pry marks on the house the men were allegedly trying to break into.

Other officers arrived and checked other homes in the neighborhood, discovering a second home where a window had been pried open.

Police said that the men left without taking anything because police had interrupted their attempts.

Other officers were able to locate the green van abandoned on Benjamin Court, just two blocks away.

An extensive search of the area using police K-9 dogs did not locate the men.

An investigation by detectives identified Napalitano as the suspect that ran from the home, Capt. Ryan said.

Police impounded the van and after obtaining a search warrant, discovered evidence linking Napalitano to the burglaries, Capt. Ryan said.

Napalitano is lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in default of $170,000 bail, police said.
