SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – (UPDATED WEDNESDAY NIGHT) Police say the investigation continues into a fatal accident yesterday that killed a 96-year-old Monroe man.

The 1:28 p.m. crash, at the intersection of Routes 32 and 535, involved a Honda Accord that was making a left from Route 535 north to Route 32 west when it was hit on the passenger side by a BMW sedan headed south on Route 535, police said.

Police who identified the 96-year-old senior as Ira Rothfarb, of Monroe, said he was a passenger in the Accord and died as a result of the accident.

The Accord’s driver, Sheldon Rothfarb, was the 69-year-old son of the victim, also from from Monroe, and was un-injured police said.

The driver of the BMW, identified by police as a 55-year-old male from Philadelphia, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, according to police.

The Monmouth Junction Fire Department, First Aid Squads from Monmouth Junction, and paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University assisted at the scene.

Routes 32 and 535 were closed for four hours as a result of the crash and subsequent investigation, police said.

Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka said the crash remains under investigation by Officer Frank Mongalieri of the South Brunswick Traffic Safety Bureau and Detective Donald Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
